Wedding Dress Length for Tall Brides: What to Confirm
Tall brides should confirm the dress length method, heel allowance, bodice proportions and alteration limits before choosing a gown online.

Use the seller’s length method
Height is useful context, but it is not a substitute for the required length measurement. Sellers may request hollow-to-floor, waist-to-floor or another method. Follow the product instructions and ask whether shoes are included in that measurement.
Do not add a guessed heel allowance when the seller already includes one. Record your height, intended heel height and the requested body measurement separately. A clear record makes it easier to resolve uncertainty before production.
Check vertical proportions above the skirt
A tall wearer may need attention at the shoulder, bust, waist or hip as well as the floor. Long sleeves can also end at a different point than expected. Two equally tall brides may need different torso adjustments.
Study where the waist seam, cups and skirt flare should sit, then ask how the selected size or custom option addresses those dimensions. A longer hem does not move these structural features. Avoid assuming that a photograph of a tall model proves the garment will match your proportions.
Do not depend on lengthening later
A plain hem may have some allowance, but a dress should not be purchased on an unconfirmed promise of extra fabric. Lace borders, shaped hems and multiple layers can limit what a fitter can change. Ask before ordering if the standard length seems marginal.
Consider both planned shoes if you will change during the reception. Aim for a hem that is safe and manageable with the agreed footwear plan, rather than accepting a tripping risk to obtain a particular photo.
Make a written fit brief
Send the exact style, color, size option and measurements with your questions. State whether you need only more length or also want advice on torso or sleeve fit. Confirm which adjustments are available and whether they are custom work.
Keep the response with the order. On arrival, inspect the dress in the intended shoes before altering it. If a required dimension appears wrong, document the concern and contact the store before changing seams or removing tags. Build time for fitting into the event schedule.

Common questions
Can a dress always be lengthened?
No. Available fabric and hem construction limit the work. Confirm adequate length before purchasing rather than relying on a later alteration.
Should I add heel height to hollow-to-floor?
Only if the seller’s instructions require it. Ask how footwear allowance is handled so it is not added twice.
